Tashara’s Story: A Life Transformed

Note: The individual’s name has been changed to “Tashara” to protect their privacy.

I came to Ophelia Speaks while running from my “pimp.” I was stuck in a brutal situation, where I felt like I had no choice. “I wasn’t allowed to say no,” I remember saying. “If I refused or said no to a client, my daddy would beat me. His main girl kept me and other girls much younger than me drugged, making us look older than we really were.”

I felt hopeless, unworthy of love. “No one wanted me,” and my “daddy” reminded me of that every day. After a while, I became numb, like an empty shell. I didn’t think for myself anymore. I depended on him for everything.

When I found Ophelia Speaks, it was the first time I felt like I could be me again. Slowly, over time, I started to feel human again. The staff at Ophelia Speaks reminded me every day that they would love me until I could love myself. I wasn’t criticized for saying no, and they showed me what real love is.

I’d run away over and over, always coming back hungry, dirty, and feeling worthless. But no matter what, Ophelia Speaks never turned me away. Even when I told them I wasn’t staying, just needed food, they made sure I was fed and had a shower before sending me back out.

Now, I’m 21, with a family of my own. Thanks to Ophelia Speaks and their loving staff, I graduated from an alternative school, I’m employed, and I hope to go to college one day. I know now that I’m worthy. My baby and I have our own apartment, and I haven’t gone back to that lifestyle.
